Cupcakes:

I'm proud. I'm getting my swirl down with the buttercream and the piping bag so I'm happy. Also they were a huge hit at my presentation. They are a cinnamon chocolate cupcake, filled with red chile cayenne hot fudge, and chocolate buttercream icing. They rock. If anyone wants the recipe let me know and I will email!

And now for some lamentation with a little Glen Arthur for inspiration:

So the past four years have been a total mixed blessing. I love my career. I'm finally feeling comfortable with this whole growing up thing (but I'm not ever giving up on my crayons). The problem is that, in the midst of all this growing up crap I lost some people along the way. Luckily I have great friends *cough cough Lin and Evan cough cough* that have put up with me for over a decade so I owe them huge. I've had good friends like Jeff and Kristen who waited for me while I was losing my mind.
Unfortunately, I've lost a few people that make me sad. The first person I really regret was someone that did a lot to help me feel comfortable with my insane right brain. She let me be artistic in a field where it's not really encouraged (I may have spreadsheets, but they are colorful as hell dammit). She helped me financially through some really tight times and I never got to pay her back. I always wonder how she's doing, but it bums me out that she never understood why I walked away. There are just friendships where you become so codependent on each other for happiness and security that you realize that you've isolated yourself, but then you realize that they have also isolated themselves. That makes you feel like an ass hole. So I walked away. I stopped enabling and hoped that that person grew now that you weren't acting like a bell jar. I thinks she has. I peek in on her art and it's amazing so I hope she's doing well.
Some people I left behind because I had to grow up and get down to business. As far as I can tell that was a good decision, although I hope I never hurt anyone's feelings. It wasn't my intention and maybe I'm selfish for leaving without explanation, but how do you explain that?
The most recent crash and burn (although not nearly as devastating as the first) is someone that has been a friend for four years and disappointed me. I won't go into the why or whatever, but it wasn't a "she used like too much" situation. She really spit on things and people I love. I have to walk away because of that. I did try EXPLAINING my anger, but I don't think she got it. Some people just don't get things like that. I also realized, after thinking about it, that I felt less like her friend and more like her Nanny. Not a good place to be in.

But here is to spreading your wings and jumping into the atmosphere like a sugar fueled bird with bit of a case of Napoleon Syndrome:

So Future and Plans... Well, move back to Phoenix. I've got two jobs, both of which I am excited for. I will have income. And you know what that means? More YARN! Okay and paying off student loans, but whatever. I'm looking forward to writing the residency program... oh wait. And I have to have a life too! Okay so plans:
1. Taking some burlesque classes. Cause I can.
2. Find a yoga studio.
3. Find a boxing gym.
4. Start running again (if my busted knee and hip will put up with that)
5. Finally start writing my pattern book and knitting my boutique line.
6. Finish some embroidery and do some more.
7. Visit Lin in Hawaii and Evan in California
8. Go to Scotland with Amanda and find brothers who own a yarn factory. One must be a ginger (that one is mine).
9. Play with Darcy (this is really no. 1 on the list so don't tell her I forgot and put her at no. 9. That dog has attitude like nobody I've ever seen).
10. Read. Read a lot.
11. Find some old friends I lost along the way.
12. Get some season tickets to Gamage.
13. Play clarinet with Grandpa and try to get a hold of a flute and oboe.
14. Is a secret, except I'm posting it on the internet. Get a few tattoos. It's time and I finally will not be broke.
15. Get a scarf and glove set to a friend that asked for them, but I didn't send them to her when I sent her other stuff.

Good plans I think. That's what I call ending on a positive note, but just in case:

Nothing says positive like a scary Russian named Epic Win kissing a mini giraffe.

XOXO,

Sugar

A Great Book for New and Old Knitters

So I'm totally in love with this new book by Joelle Hoverson:

Okay, please ignore the hat on the front. Yes, yes, its sooooo cute. If my mom had even THOUGHT about putting that thing on my head there would have been HELL to pay. The rest of the book is great. There is a super cute cardigan, baby socks, a tam, and an enterlac blanket. The patterns are sweet and simple, very classic, and easily modifiable. I've made 2 pairs of the baby socks currently and they turn out adorable, and since they are a sock I suspect they are more likely to stay on those tricky little feet. I already have suggested a copy to my beginning knitting students, who were easily able to read and knit the patterns.
The other super cool thing about this book is that everything is separated according to how long it should take you to knit. Now it all depends if you are a fast or slow knitter and how easily distracted you are, but I find the timing to be pretty true. This makes figuring out how much time it will take for gifts. I also enjoy the fact that the smaller items use luxury yarns. Who would say no to an angora tam? Ummm, not me. And so the projects are practical, beautiful, simple, make amazing gifts. I hope everyone enjoys this book as much as me!

XOXO,
Heather

And now for something completely different:

Knitting in the Round and other Madness

So I bought the Louisa Harding Queen of Hearts knitting pattern book:

I totally love it. Partially because it's Alice in Wonderland themed, but also because the knitting patterns (for the most part) look like they would fit well. They have some shaping through the waist and the inclusion of hearts in the patterns has not made them annoyingly cutesy cute. There is an edge to the hearts, which is perfect for the theme of the pattern book.
As much as I love this pattern book, however, there is one thing that irritates me... which leads me to a story:
When I was in Taos with a classmate I was sick and, therefore, heavily medicated on pseudophedrine. I had knitted this lovely baby alpaca tam for myself (so I wouldn't freeze to death). Unfortunately I dropped in the parking lot of "The Knitting Store." Someone in Taos now has a very nice hat.

So now I'm trying to re-knit a hat for myself out of the before discussed Louisa Harding book. It is, appropriately named, The Mad Hatter:

Isn't it pretty? The girl looks a little "Deer in the Headlights," but ignore her. The hat looks awesome. Here's where I am annoyed. The pattern is written on STRAIGHT needles. I have already re-written the pattern (crazy easy) to be knitted in the round. Why in the name of Pete would you ever ever ever knit a hat on straight needles unless it is totally necessary (and it isn't). Annoying Louisa, my dear friend. A-NNOY-ING. I'm using a totally different yarn, which is lovely, but I will review it when the hat is done.

So lets see... what else is going on. I'm graduating from pharmacy school in May. After that I have to pack my bags and move back to Phoenix for my two jobs after graduation. I'm kind of excited for my jobs, but kinda ick for moving back to Phoenix (its just too bloody hot). I've got some good friends out there though, and some amazing shopping. Here's the important question: Where do I find my yarn?!

XOXO,
Heather

Knitting, Being Thankful, and various other philisophical moments

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; First I am happy I can knit and crochet because those two things (and especially the knitting) because those things have kept me sane. My life isn't perfect and there have been days when it feels like I might fall to pieces. Knitting gave me a reason to keep going. Instead of taking life one day at a time I started taking it one row at a time. This means I always have something to look forward to. Thinking about it now it's all the stupid little things that used to make me upset. That one thing that my ex said. That nasty little comment from fat-ass flat-ass (one of my classmates). That invitation I didn't get from my extended family when everyone else was invited. At this point I've decided to destroy sadness with tit for tat. I'll smash little things that make me sad with little things that make me really happy.
First, Red Lipstick:
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; This month, however, I've been touched by a few people in my life who seem to have worse luck than me. My friend Lori's nephew ended up with cancer (he's only two!) so I'm working on a chemo cap and a little stuffed toy for him. On top of that another friend, we'll call her Miss J (I don't know who she's talked to so I don't want to oust her), has been diagnosed with stage 2 aggressive breast cancer so she's getting a single mastectomy. I have been asked to knit her a new boob. I'm knitting her a few. If I were getting a new boob I'd want a few. The pattern is here.
I am thankful for my luck and:
XOXO,
Heather

Getting to Know Me and What I've Been Up To

So I am TOTALLY aware that I am the worst blogger in the entire world, for which I am sorry. It has been so long so let's reintroduce ourselves. First, my name is Heather:
I am a pharmacy student. In fact that's me for my first last exam. Just a semester left and then clinical rotations and THEN a two year residency. Other than being at school I also work as a math tutor for kids (K-12), I work for two different regular grocery store pharmacies, I work for Albuquerque Indian Health pharmacy (awesome place), I'm beginning to teach beginning knitting at Village Wools (HOLLA!!! I had to... I'm sorry), and I also have Sugar Plum Ferret Knits. Yeah... that might explain my sporadic blogs. The only reason I get any knitting done is because I do it in class. My professors don't always know how to deal with me, but the knitting stops me from fidgeting and heckling, so they let it go. That and my grades went up. So I'm the freaky ADD kid who won't take ADD meds that doesn't take notes and knits in class, but still somehow made it into the honors society (which I didn't join because where do I have the time for that?!). Confused? Yeah, they are to, which is probably why they gave up arguing and trying to figure it out.
I love to knit and I love vintage (just in case the red lipstick and pearls didn't give it away. I'm just trying to to make sure you are paying attention). My latest project was for BobbinBombshell. These are gloves based off a vintage pattern with pom-poms added. They are an alpaca/wool blend:Want a pair yourself? Go check out this listing. My latest designing project was this:The red is not mine, but the mask is fully knitted otherwise! I will not be knitting another I think. I can't STAND intarsia right now. So that's me and that's what I've been up to!

XOXO,
Heather

The Bad Blogger Attempts To Be Redeemed

Okay, so I've been bad! I don't call, I don't write.... I've been a bad blogger. So here we go! What have I been up to?! I did my pharmacy externship at the Albuquerque VA Hospital (very cool place). I joined an Etsy Street Team, soon to be ArtFire Guild called the Enchanted Artists and Crafters of New Mexico, of which I am now secretary (yes I can taste the irony as well). You can find us on Etsy by searching EACNM. This is what you will find: http://www.etsy.com/search_results.php?search_type=handmade&search_query=EACNM&order=date_desc&ship_to=

I've been knitting and I actually attended my first craft show and did rather well considering it was the hottest two days of the year and I was selling WOOL.

Also! My Mom, sister, and Dad came out to visit and here are some pictures from our trip to the aquarium:

Very pretty no? I just finished sewing up another Rose McGowan dildo cozy:
And of course I've been knitting scarves, boleros, and various other objects that I've been too lazy to take pictures of before I sold them. I am working on starting a line of garters:
Clearly I'm still experimenting. I also joined a knit along with Raw Fish and her crew on ravelry... which means I need to get of my ass and spin (some yarn).
Current Projects:

A alpaca/peruvian wool cardigan

A silk/cotton scarf I have dubbed "Little Egypt" (the unofficial mother of burlesque)

A silk/cotton lace set of wrist warmers

An Alpaca scarf with matching wrist warmers (I haven't given her a name yet)

An Alpaca wrist warmer set called "Opal" (a burlesque dancer in the 70's and 80's)

Two more cozy sets called "Doris Day" and "Sandra Dee"

And I'm pondering a candy cane dildo cozy..

So that's what I've been up to... oh yeah and working 7-6 days a week... cause I'm nuts.

I'll post again soon with some more pictures of finished and works in progress AND picturs of the aquarium!

XOXO!
Heather

Quick update

So this is what I've been up to:
Knitting flowers for Hillary, knitting a scarf for Kymba, knitting two boleros for Susie and Sally, knitting flowers for the Craft Crawl, working seven days a week, and attempting not to lose my mind. Here is a close up of the c-section:
This was an awesome project and the lady I made it for was crazy nice and just convo'd me that one lady might like one with a detachable vagina! Scandalous! And hopefully next week I'll post a picture of a snood commission. WAYYYYYY behind. So what have I been up to? The normal: Knitting, working, going to school. I JUST joined a community called Artfire (www.artfire.com) to sell my stuff because Etsy is just too bloody crowded and they ALREADY have their favorites. So I finished the naughty/practical cozies (see the lovely mini etsy shop on the left hand side of the blog)! Love them. You should love them too and BUY dammit! I made a set of matching baby hats for a super awesome classmate (Jen really is a badass) for her nephews (pictures pending I HOPE). So I swore I hadn't been a putz and that I'd post pictures so HERE GOES!
So this is a set I made for a client on etsy. That's Susie, my hand model and hat model... that's me in the mini-skirt. Yes it was SUPPOSED to be weird, but I felt the green showed off the brown legwarmers PERFECTLY.

This is one of a pair of silk kettle dyed fingerless gloves that I made for a violinist (yes I took that picture during class. Do you see my glowing i-clicker?). Yes even the pinky has no tip, but my pinky is abnormally small... which is why I am NOT my own hand model... ever. The cool thing about the yarn is it went toward a charity in South America to give rural families income!
This is another pair of fingerless gloves that I made for ANOTHER violinist (or fiddler... whatever). Meghan (my little sister) was my hand model in this one, which is why her pinky pokes out of the top. This yarn was chocolate brown, kettle dyed, baby alpaca that ALSO went to a charity to build schools for children in South America. They're pretty plain, but I did knit a more decorative cuff (a faux cable):

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; It's been awhile! Quick post to makes sure no one loses interest (and how could you? I'm fabulous!). I haven't posted the Pin-Up cozy line... and then I realized I forgot to tell you that I forgot to tell you I was making a a set for Marilyn... I'm a jackass. So I've had a TON of customs and I swear I will post pictures of those soon (I'm in AZ right now so I don't have access to my pictures!). So since everyone has been doing this "New Years Resolution" thing here are mine:
1. Finish Pin-up line and post.
2. Eat healthy (and a much lower sodium diet)
3. Don't drop my phone (again)
4. Start an excel sheet on my knitting to keep better track (and don't cuss at my computer in the process)
5. Get a pharmacy job (dammit)
6. Work out more (more walks uphill to save my knees and lungs, but still increase my heart rate)
7. Not date douche bags (or guys that move out of the country)
8. Save up for a laptop (so I ALWAYS have my pictures)
9. Knit up enough in ADVANCE so that I can attend the Ghetto Gloss Fair in California

And there you have it.... Now to get back to knitting!

Ferret Hugs!
Heather

A Long List of Updates... and Some New Beginnings!

Okay, so WOW. It's been a few wild weeks. I was sick, my mom, sister, and puppies visited, AND I had an ass load of exams (and yes, that is the medical term... and if it isn't, it is now). So the Dr. Who hat... FINISHED!

This is the very beginning that I started knitting when I was studying. I'm pretty sure the blurriness of the camera is probably just the camera projecting what I was seeing at that point. Studying for too long WILL make you go blind.

So I started it out on circular needles (which I knit with exclusively anyway: they fit in my purse better).

At this point I'm just getting sick of knitting in circles in a continuous stockinette... call it ADD but I was BORED!

And then I switched everything onto double pointed needles (which have become my new best friend lately, but I'll explain that later!).

This was the sucky part... Sewing in ALL those ends and doing it in such a way that the seem on the stripes matched up perfectly and you couldn't see where it was sewn in.

This is the finished hat, but this is actually the back seam. So basically I got the stripes matched up PERFECT. I'm proud.

And I told everyone I'd share the pattern with them! So you can basically impose this stripe patterns on any beanie design you like so I'm just going to toss out the strip pattern. I basically smooshed (you can smash knitting, its too squishy) down the scarf pattern so you got decent color distribution. This is written with the number of rows in with the colors, working from the bottom of the hat (knitted in a 2x2 ribbing) up to the cap:

Dr. Who Hat Stripe Pattern

3 tan
2 purple
4 brown
2 yellow
3 gray
3 red
11 green
3 yellow
2 tan
3 purple
2 red
4 gray
3 brown
9 tan
2 purple
4 green
3 yellow
8 red

It's all terribly exciting isn't it?

So what else have I been up to to occupy myself ... well I'm starting a new series in my etsy store... I'm trying to refocus, or actually HAVE some focus I guess. So what I'm starting is a new series inspired by pin-ups and beautiful women. The series is going to include dildo cozies (its very important to keep our lovely glass ones protected!), tea bag/condom cozies, and cell phone/ipod cozies! They will all be knitted with their specific patterns and colors, all in a wool or wool blend (I find wool is durable, soft, and molds to the... um... hardware well during blocking). Each will be closed with ribbon rather than buttons (quick easy access ;-) ). Vegan and custom sizes will be available by request and if you're allergic to wool I am ALWAYS willing to remake the product in something you're NOT allergic too (I've got some freaky weird allergies myself). So far these are the girls:

Esther Williams: the gorgeous and amazing swimming actress that was the actress in Million Dollar Mermaid

I'll also, of course, be doing the lovely Betty Page:

The ever lovely Dita Von Teese (drop dead gorgeous):

OF COURSE Rose McGowan:

And last but DEFINITELY not least, the always classy Audrey Hepburn:

That's it for now!
Ferret Hugs!
Heather

Doctor Who... Proof that every end has a new beginning

So I finally finished the Doctor Who scarf and I am SOOOO proud because it is a MONSTER:

I am 4'11"... not super tall, but wow... if I were to own this scarf rather than handing it over to someone else it would be a health hazard. I have a REALLY hard time walking without triping over my own two feet and almost dying so this scarf would be my doom. If I wear it it drags on the ground! It's about 141.5 inches. No joke. Thats over 11 feet long.. almost 12. I could have pulled a Lady Godiva, but they might have shut down my blog.

So NOW I'm onto a new project! I'm working on a Doctor Who hat for a friend at school and its been fun. I based the pattern off Ellen's Knit Hat on the lion brand website (http://www.lionbrand.com/patterns/kwe-ellensHat.html). I have modified it, but that was the inspiration. Here's what it's begun to look like:

It's been kinda fun. See! I'm doing stripes! I said I should do more and I AM! And I didn't even need a new years resolution to do it. I'll post finished pictures in the middle of next week and I'll post the stripe pattern for

you Doctor Who lovers out there.

I've also been attempting to be good and write down my patterns and ideas so I can actually DUPLICATE them... rather than just ending up with a one of a kind miracle because somehow it turned out right without a pattern. I have to actually share my pattern book with you to do another shameless plug for a favorite artist:

This is a journal I've made into a pattern book. The artist is Anne Taintor at http://www.annetaintor.com/. I love vintage stuff. My friends will tell you I am a whore for pin-up. And this is art you can carry with you that will ALWAYS make you laugh. She's amazing. Unfortunately I have to get back to studying for an exam that is going to slaughter me regardless of whether I study or not, but I want to at least say I tried. So this is my first blog which means I PROBABLY don't have any readers yet... which means I'm talking to myself, but I'm kinda used to that. Right now I'm working on the season 12 Dr. Who Scarf from http://www.doctorwhoscarf.com/ .

Last time I checked it was 92 inches long, which makes it WAY taller than I am, by about 2 feet and 9 inches. It's been a fun project! I really like knitting stripes (I don't know why I don't knit stripes more). It's kind of crazy running around with a scarf that takes up more room in my bag than my notes. Here is the infamous beast draped over my rocking chair:

I'm getting so close to finishing and I've got more projects after that! Whew! Between this and EXAMS... BLEH!

After this I have a Dr. Who hat (someone in class wants the same colors in hat form) and then a chunky capelett for my best friend Nikki Nightshade (super exciting because I like seeing people WEARING my stuff). She does some beautiful art herself:

This one is my FAVORITE. Its so cool with all the fun little details... its a SUPER sugary sugar skull! Her stuff is at http://www.diegoshouseofsugar.etsy.com/ .

As much as I LOVE doing customs I can't wait to get back to spinning and stuff. I just bought some amazing roving from Copperpot on etsy (http://www.copperpot.etsy.com/). I've loved her stuff so I finally bought 8 ounces of Wild Rose from her and it's SOOO soft so I cant weight to start playing with it:

I know I've done a lot of plugging today... partially because I shop online like a rich mans wife (that's on the to-do list! Not really, but it would be convenient) and partially because I want to avoid studying... on to Mechanisms of Drug Action... weeeeeee....

Ferret Hugs (its a hug with a short attention span that plays with your hair and jewelry),
Heather

check out www.sugarplumferret.etsy.com to see some finished projects!
